True Discipleship Pt. 4
Over the past three weeks we have looked at four different elements of discipleship that are required to be successful and effective in your discipleship endeavors. We discussed the core of discipleship which is Yeshua. How to take what we know and build relationships through tough love and discipling love. We figured out what intentions we must approach discipleship with. And we learned that the Ruach or Holy Spirit is our voice of reason that shows us that without love everything we do is for naught. He is our guide and our motivation. That leaves us with three elements left.
Today, we will start with the first element and if we have time, we will work into the next one. The next element we will discuss is the bible or the Basic Instruction Book for Life on Earth. The problem with this element is the complete disregard for what is written in it. And yes, there is disregard by people who have been doing discipleship for decades. Can anyone tell me what the disregard is? The disregard is the complete overlooking of what it takes to follow the Messiah and the implementation of a purely man-made prayer that insists that a single prayer gets you saved. In this perspective, discipleship has lost it’s way due to man’s ignorance and money-making ways. Let’s see what we aught to know about the role the bible has in the process of discipleship.
While we look at the bible for its place in discipleship, we need to look at goal of the bible as it pertains to the formation of a disciple because it is that forming of a disciple that gives the bible it’s role in discipleship.
2 And do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, so that you prove what is that good and well-pleasing and perfect desire of Elohim.
3 For I say, through the favour which has been given to me, to everyone who is among you, not to think of himself more highly than he should think, but to think soberly, as Elohim has given to each a measure of belief.
When we read this passage, we need to see the underlying meaning behind it. The base of this passage is about the renewing of the mind. Look at it from this perspective. We were all created to be obedient to the Father, however, because of Adam and Eve, we have grown to become a very disobedient people who live after the flesh rather than the spirit. Our minds must be renewed back to the way it was intended to be. Now taking this into perspective and making it applicable to our gatekeeper of salvation, Yeshua Messiah, we know we must proceed through the gate at the design and example given to us by Yeshua. Where can we find the design and example? The bible, hence, it’s role in discipleship is given.
2 Timothy 3:16-17
16 All Scripture is breathed out by Elohim and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for setting straight, for instruction in righteousness,
17 that the man of Elohim might be fitted, equipped for every good work.
After understanding that our minds need to be renewed to fit the design that Yeshua gave example to, we see in 2 Timothy that it is through scripture or the bible that this renewing is going to be given in the form of reproof, setting straight and instruction so we can be equipped for every good work.
12 Because we do not wrestle against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against authorities, against the world-rulers of the darkness of this age, against spiritual matters of wickedness in the heavenlies.
As disciples, we are going to be doing many good works. All of these good works that we are going to do is going to be challenged by our enemy, especially trying to proselytize other people into the faith as new disciples. So the bibles role not only equips us to walk in righteousness, live as Yeshua lived but also to defeat the enemy as we profess the Good News in hopes of bringing more and more children into the House of YHVH.
2 Timothy 4:1-5
1 In the sight of Elohim and the Master יהושע Messiah, who shall judge the living and the dead at His appearing and His reign, I earnestly charge you:
2 Proclaim the Word! Be urgent in season, out of season. Convict, warn, appeal, with all patience and teaching.
3 For there shall be a time when they shall not bear sound teaching, but according to their own desires, they shall heap up for themselves teachers tickling the ear,
4 and they shall indeed turn their ears away from the truth, and be turned aside to myths.
5 But you be sober in all matters, suffer hardships, do the work of an evangelist, accomplish your service completely.
Here we are being shown a couple of things but most importantly, we are being told that we are going to be battling an uphill battle. Take note to the charge by Paul: PROCLAIM THE WORD! While proclaiming, we will convict which relates to getting others to be obedient to the Word properly. Warn, a telling sign that we should warn others of the coming judgement of the living and the dead and that the only way to be judged righteous is to be renewed through the writings and teachings in scripture. We also need to appeal or make an urgent request to others about this good news and what it means to give belief and faith to it. When we do this, it needs to be done with patience and in the spirit of teaching which will come naturally if you submit to the Father and His way. We need to be very conscious of the message we proclaim to be sure that it is inclusive of all the necessary actions that all believers need to know which is the biggest message that will bring about all things required.
2 Corinthians 10:4-6
4 For the weapons we fight with are not fleshly but mighty in Elohim for overthrowing strongholds,
5 overthrowing reasonings and every high matter that exalts itself against the knowledge of Elohim, taking captive every thought to make it obedient to the Messiah,
6 and being ready to punish all disobedience, when your obedience is complete.
If we correctly teach others about the Good News of Messiah and what is required, it will ultimately take us down the road of making every thought obedient to Messiah. As stated in verse 6, when this is done, it will complete obedience in us because it will show us how to love. Everything else that is required will develop through the consistent searching of scripture. The bible helps build faith in all of us but most importantly, it is the living representative for babes to learn who the Messiah is and how to become righteous in Him. This is what happens for those who truly desire to live a faithful life in Yeshua Messiah. They approach the Word knowing that they need the guidance and presence of the Holy Spirit for the Father’s word to have a real impact on our lives.
1 Corinthians 2:12-14
12 And we have received, not the spirit of the world, but the Spirit that is from Elohim, in order to know what Elohim has favourably given us,
13 which we also speak, not in words which man’s wisdom teaches but which the Set-apart Spirit teaches, comparing spiritual matters with spiritual matters.
14 But the natural man does not receive the matters of the Spirit of Elohim, for they are foolishness to him, and he is unable to know them, because they are spiritually discerned.
Looking here, we see that it is the teaching of the Set-Apart Spirit. What is it that the Set-Apart Spirit teaches? The bible and as well as the will of the Father when the Spirit is moved to direct us in our lives. That’s the thing about this bible element, it is directly correlated to the growth and development of faith and obedience in the life of everyone that partakes of this walk with Messiah. With the bible, we lose our instruction books that helps back up those feelings of obedience that we get when we are approached with acts of disobedient choices.
Think about it, can any of you give testimony to a moment in time where you were thinking about something you should or shouldn’t do and you pick up your bible and the answer you were looking for is just there for your reading? I know I can and that’s because when we pick up that bible, we pick up the Word of YHVH to turn to the Father for answers and guess what, HE ANSWERS. That’s what makes this walk the best and when we share the Good News, taking the time to display some moments where these events happen can go a long way to bringing someone to the faith.
6 But without belief it is impossible to please Him, for he who comes to Elohim has to believe that He is, and that He is a rewarder of those who earnestly seek Him.
Again we need to seek Him to receive the rewards from Him that is what is needed. We seek Him in many ways. We can seek Him in prayer, love, guidance but most importantly in the Word. The bible is an integral part of the faith and is commonly overlooked. I get shocked when people say that they get bored or restless when reading the bible. The problem is they are looking at it with the wrong eyes and reading it with the wrong intent. This is the problem with a lot of people look at the bible as a book, but point is the bible is a living word and a tool of the Most High to assist us in our walk. Do you see where this bible has a role in our lives? Do not make the mistake of underutilizing the Word in your life. Many people are lost in the church system because they don’t read or use their bible. When we appropriate utilize our scriptures and read it with an earnest commitment to personal responsibility and obedience. This will help us to view the Scriptures with a special focus on the Messiah and the way He meant for us to walk. It’s such an important element that gets overlooked. When this happens, what do you think the focus of the people who do overlook the scriptures become? They start listening to men over scripture and they get lost in the folds of doctrine. When this happens and someone who knows the truth comes to tell them the truth, it becomes a fight and when scripture is given, they don’t listen and make excuses. This is why it is such an important element, when you replace it with man you lose your instruction book and fall into the traps of the religious system. This brings up the fact that the bible refutes traditions, a word that can be used in two different contexts, traditions of men which nullify scriptures and are not supported by the Word and the traditions of the Father which are in accord with and recorded in scripture.
1 Peter 1:17-21
17 And if you call on the Father, who without partiality judges according to each one’s work, pass the time of your sojourning in fear,
18 knowing that you were redeemed from your futile behaviour inherited from your fathers, not with what is corruptible, silver or gold,
19 but with the precious blood of Messiah, as of a lamb unblemished and spotless,
20 foreknown, indeed, before the foundation of the world, but manifested in these last times for your sakes,
21 who through Him believe in Elohim who raised Him from the dead and gave Him esteem, so that your belief and expectation are in Elohim.
8 See to it that no one makes a prey of you through philosophy and empty deceit, according to the tradition of men, according to the elementary matters of the world, and not according to Messiah.
2 Thessalonians 3:6
6 But we command you, brothers, in the Name of our Master יהושע Messiah, that you withdraw from every brother who walks disorderly and not according to the tradition which you received from us.
2 Thessalonians 2:13-17
13 But we ought to give thanks to Elohim always for you, brothers, beloved by the Master, because Elohim from the beginning chose you to be saved – in set-apartness of Spirit, and belief in the truth
14 unto which He called you by our Good News, for the obtaining of the esteem of our Master יהושע Messiah.
15 So, then, brothers, stand fast and hold the traditions which you were taught, whether by word or by our letter.
16 And our Master יהושע Messiah Himself, and our Elohim and Father, who has loved us and given us everlasting encouragement and good expectation, through favour,
17 encourage your hearts and establish you in every good word and work.
The bible gives us our traditions, our directions, our instructions. It confirms our feelings, our moving to do things, confirmation to our thoughts, a voice from the Father and a direct connection to Yeshua. We should not overlook, deny, underutilize, argue, ignore or belittle the only tool we have. We must search it out in truth and use it to do what we are called to do, go out and make disciples. The way we do that is written in our bibles. Do we have any questions?
